Eighth Grade Curriculum

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS

Students receive advanced-level linguistic and text analysis skills, providing them with an in-depth understanding of the English language, which prepares Carden students to more easily approach the higher-level texts they will be encountering in high school. Students new to the Carden language arts program are provided with the methodology and controls used for an in-depth understanding of the pronunciation, spelling and origins of words, along with the grammar tools utilized for high-level comprehension of text. Technology is incorporated through the use of the 1-1 iPad program.

WRITING SKILLS

  • Trait Writing: Students will continue to follow the writing process of prewriting, first draft, revising, editing, and publishing. They will be using the six traits of writing; ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions (grammar). They will explore these writing genres; descriptive, narrative, expository, persuasive, response to literature, creative writing including poetry, and research writing. Writing activities will be a part of your child’s daily experience.
  • Research and Reporting: The fundamentals of data gathering and the analysis of written material as the basis of cohesive and meaningful report writing, along with the application of composition techniques specific to report writing.
  • Oral Reports and Public Speaking: Engage in formal and informal presentations in front of a classroom or assemblies.
  • Poetry: Students will learn how to create their own poetry as well as learn about figurative language used in literature and poetry. Annual participation in National poetry contests gives students the ability to demonstrate their skills.
  • Modern and Classic Literature: An exploration of modern fiction includes discussion and seminar formats that lead students to discover meaning and relevancy of important works of our time. A formal approach is applied in the study of major works, which facilitates a high level of understanding and appreciation of the plot, story elements and themes. Included are:

UNITED STATES HISTORY

  • Students are presented with an overview of United States History and its heritage from the establishment of the colonies to post 9/11. The exploration of the social, political and cultural values underlying the development of the country is an important component of study.
  • Students explore topics within the curriculum through various books and written materials and research projects. Discussion and seminar formats, coupled with written and orally presented reports, are adopted methods aimed at developing and refining critical thinking and information-analysis skills.

MATHEMATICS

Algebra 1 has an emphasis on writing, solving, and graphing linear and quadratic equations. Mathematical reasoning is interwoven throughout.

Students review the algebra and geometry covered in seventh grade, then continue on.

SCIENCE

Through hands on experiments and our text (Pearson-Prentice Hall Physical Science: Concepts in Action) students study:

  • Introduction to and review of science skills; preparation of science fair project
  • Chemistry: Properties of Matter, States of Matter, Atomic Structure, Periodic Table, Chemical Bonds, Chemical Reactions, Solutions, Acids and Bases, Carbon Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry
  • Physics: Motion, Forces and Motion, Forces in Fluids, Work, Power and Machines, Energy, Thermal Energy and Heat, Mechanical Waves and Sound, Electromagnetic Spectrum and Light, Optics, Electricity, Magnetism

MUSIC AND MUSIC APPRECIATION

A continuation of American Music History from 1800’s to 1960’s, including: Genteel, Spirituals, Minstrels Ragtime, Blues and Jazz. The course of study includes listening appreciation and performance.

ART AND ART APPRECIATION

A wide range of art media and techniques will be explored, with an emphasis on self-portraiture. The students will study a variety of artists and utilize their works for inspiration in the students’ own pieces.

They will study and utilize two-point perspective, create a square for the Eighth Grade quilt, and complete a reproduction of an artists’ work. Pen and ink, and line drawing will be introduced. The students will explore sculpture with paper-mache. Eighth graders will design a poster for a cause.

Ipads will be used for research, ideas, creating portfolios, storyboards, and presentations in Art.

FRENCH

Students work from textbook Et Vous French 1.

A student with no prior knowledge of French will begin in a French class that includes vocabulary building, grammar, sentence structure and basic conversation. For continuing students and those with knowledge of basic French, this class includes composition, French culture, literature and conversation. For an introduction to French literature, students read “Les Misérables”.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

  • Sportsmanship and Health: The development of good-sportsmanship and a positive attitude towards healthy physical exercise continues to be an underlying principal of Carden Physical Education. Numerous fun and skill-building games and activities are included through the year, as well as participation in the President’s Physical Fitness Challenge.
  • Organized Sports: Students participate in different team sports, providing them with exposure to competition, responsibility and commitment. These sports are volleyball, flag football, basketball, and softball.

TECHNOLOGY

All graduating eighth graders should be ready to take computers in high school. They may work on MSOffice tools used in the previous years as a review, along with HTML. Students will learn fundamental concepts of binary number representation, and basic sorting techniques. Python will be introduced as a new language with simple projects that will continue to focus on basic fundamentals of programming. Scratch will be used when required.

Eighth graders are issued iPads for use in the classroom and at home. The classroom teacher will introduce learning apps, videos, presentations, interactive quizzes and documentation to enhance what is taught in the classroom. Students with different styles of learning and understanding will be able to use the iPads to their advantage. Teachers can also individualize teaching when necessary. Students will also use readily available tools such as the dictionary, calculator, camera and more.
