Sixth Grade Curriculum

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS

Students receive advanced-level linguistic and text analysis skills, providing them with an in-depth understanding of the English language, which prepares Carden students to more easily approach the higher-level texts they will be encountering in high school. Students new to the Carden language arts program are provided with the methodology and controls used for an in-depth understanding of the pronunciation, spelling and origins of words, along with the grammar tools utilized for high-level comprehension of text. Technology is incorporated through the use of the 1-1 iPad program.

WRITING SKILLS

  • Trait Writing: Students will continue to follow the writing process of prewriting, first draft, revising, editing, and publishing. They will be using the six traits of writing; ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions (grammar). They will explore these writing genres; descriptive, narrative, expository, persuasive, response to literature, creative writing including poetry, and research writing. Writing activities will be a part of your child’s daily experience.
  • Research and Reporting: The fundamentals of data gathering and the analysis of written material as the basis of cohesive and meaningful report writing, along with the application of composition techniques specific to report writing.
  • Oral Reports and Public Speaking: Engage in formal and informal presentations in front of a classroom or assemblies
  • Poetry: Students will learn how to create their own poetry as well as learn about figurative language used in literature and poetry. Annual participation in National poetry contests gives students the ability to demonstrate their skills.
  • Modern and Classic Literature: An exploration of modern fiction includes discussion and seminar formats that lead students to discover meaning and relevancy of important works of our time. A formal approach is applied in the study of major works, which facilitates a high level of understanding and appreciation of the plot, story elements and themes. Included are:

ANCIENT HISTORY

  • Students are presented with an overview of ancient civilization and its heritage. The exploration of the social, political and cultural values underlying the development of the past is an important component of this study.
  • Students explore topics within the curriculum through various books and written materials and research projects. Class is designed in a seminar and colloquial format and is coupled with written and orally presented reports. These are the methods used for developing and refining, critical thinking and information analysis skills.

MATHEMATICS

Pre-Algebra has an emphasis on working with numbers and equations and understanding the underlying mathematics principles. It also focuses on the problem-solving strategies and the applied logic of algebra.

SCIENCE

Through hands on experiments and our text (Pearson-Prentice Hall Earth Science) students study:

  • Introduction to and review of science skills; preparation for science fair project.
  • Planet Earth: Mapping, Minerals and Rocks, Plate Tectonics, Earthquakes and Volcanoes
  • Earth’s Changing Surface: Weathering, Soil, Erosion and Deposition, Geologic Time, Energy Resources
  • Fresh Water and Oceans
  • Weather and Climate
  • Astronomy: Solar System, Stars, Galaxies, and the Universe

MUSIC AND MUSIC APPRECIATION

  • The exploration of the seven concepts of music as well as the study of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, texture, tone and tonality are presented.
  • The culmination of general music is included with the conclusion of a study of Classical Music: the lives of Beethoven, Handel, Tchaikowsky and Vivaldi with listening appreciation.

ART AND ART APPRECIATION

A wide range of art media and techniques will be explored, paying special attention to form and volume in their drawing. The students will study a variety of artists such as Henri Rousseau and Paul Cezanne and utilize their works for inspiration in the students’ own pieces. We will explore handbuilding with clay and learn the processes involved in ceramics. The students are introduced to brush painting using calligraphy inks and pens on special rice paper. Special emphasis will be paid to shading and tonal value. Use of graphite and charcoal as art tools will be introduced. They will use and explore soft pastels. Decoupage will be introduced.

FRENCH

A student with no prior knowledge of French will begin in a French class that includes vocabulary building, grammar, sentence structure and basic conversation. For continuing students and those with knowledge of basic French, this class includes composition, French culture, literature and conversation. For an introduction to French literature, students read “The Little Prince”.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

  • Sportsmanship and Health: The development of good sportsmanship and a positive attitude towards healthy physical exercise continues to be an underlying principal of Carden Physical Education. Numerous fun and skill-building games and activities are included through the year, as well as participation in the President’s Physical Fitness Challenge.
  • Physical Fitness and Activity: Students will participate in strength training exercises that will help improve their level of fitness. Introducing them to proper ways of increasing muscular strength and endurance will increase their level of performance in sports.
  • Organized Sports: Students participate in different team sports, providing them with exposure to competition, responsibility and commitment. These sports are volleyball, flag football, basketball, soccer, track and field, cross country, and softball.

TECHNOLOGY

The start of middle school involves projects using the tools that have been learned in elementary. Safe and smart use of the Internet will be addressed with discussions on how to be a good citizen of cyberspace. They will continue to learn how to use MSOffice tools which can then be applied to other subjects, when required. Google Sketch-Up will improve their spatial skills. Many projects may be collaborative to foster team work. They will work on exercises and projects to enhance computational thinking skills such as breaking a task into smaller tasks. Programming concepts such as iteration, conditional statements, input-output statements will be implemented using Scratch.

Sixth graders are issued iPads for use in the classroom and at home. The classroom teacher will introduce learning apps, videos, presentations, interactive quizzes and documentation to enhance what is taught in the classroom. Students with different styles of learning and understanding will be able to use the iPads to their advantage. Teachers will individualize teaching when necessary. Students will also use readily available tools such as the dictionary, calculator, camera and more.
